Forearm Brace

A forearm brace is used in the treatment of tennis elbow. This condition is characterized by

swelling and pain and occurs when there are tears or damages in the tendon fibers. It stems from the overuse of the ligaments, tendons, and muscles around the elbow joint. Contrary to what the name suggests, tennis elbow is not acquired only from playing tennis. It is generally caused by incorrect and repetitive body movements such as those made by golfers, bowlers, and house cleaners among others.

What is a Forearm Brace?

Otherwise known as an elbow brace, it’s a type of brace that can help reduce the pain and increase the range of motion when you have tennis elbow.

An elbow brace is not so much a brace as it is a sleeve that you slide over your forearm onto your elbow. It provides pressure to support the connective tissues and the local muscles. This is different from a brace per se, which is a hinged type of support that restricts certain movements of the forearm. A hyperextension forearm tendonitis brace keeps the joint from moving beyond the normal extension and prevents joint rotation. An overload forearm tendonitis brace, on the other hand, is usually used for sports like volleyball, baseball, and throwing. This type of brace takes in the stress that results from overhead movements.

A forearm support wrap may or may not come with an elbow sleeve. This can be made of Lycra, Cotton, or another type of elastic material. When using this type of wrap, be sure not to pull it too tight so as not to cut off circulation to the lower arm.

Straps are another type of tennis elbow support, and are probably the most popular. They are made of small bands of material that have Velcro connections. They can either be filled with air or use magnets to support the elbow.

Since a tennis elbow injury affects muscles that run from the joint to the wrist, newer models of arm band support connect two arm bands together for increased support. You may also benefit from using wrist hand orthoses, Thumb Spica splints, wrist forearm splints, and shoulder braces.

Using A Forearm Support Brace

Using this brace can help aid healing through the following:

• It promotes blood flow in the elbow, which allows tissues, nutrients, building proteins, and growth hormones to heal the injury.
• A tennis elbow brace reduces thee inflammation. It applies pressure on the injured area, keeping all fluid away from the region; thereby reducing the swelling.
• It provides the effects of a massage to the injured area. This results in better blood flow.
• A forearm support is for compression and not for immobilization. You are still able to move your elbow when you use this type of brace. This is important, as immobilizing your elbow can make you force movement, which can cause more damage. It may force your elbow into a certain position. By allowing movement, you can also perform some exercises.
